BENGAL CATS

click here for information about Asian Leopard Cat and view some photos of this stunning cat so that you may see why the breeding of the bengal cat continued. To capture this amazing beauty in a domestic cat is the aim of every serious bengal breeder.

The Bengal Cat is a domestic cat with the look of it's "wild" ancestors. They are an intelligent cat that loves life and everything in it. They are a wonderful, loving, caring cat with a sense of humour you never thought possible in a cat.

The myth of the Bengal cat being a wild animal is just that, a myth! In fact, because the bengal cat is being bred for it's temperament, it is one of the most well adjusted cats you will ever come across. The texture of the coat is outstanding, and is unequalled by any other breed of cat. There is no other breed that displays the gold or pearl glitter (sparkled effect best shown in sunlight) of the bengal cat. Although you will now find some cats developing it with the help of a bengal cat in their bloodline.

In the early 1980's an american pediatrician, Dr Centerwall, had been researching feline leukemia and discovered that the Asian Leopard Cat (Felis Bengalensis) was naturally immune to leukemia, he crossed it with an american domestic cat to see if he could breed this immunity into a domestic cat. Unfortunately, there was little evidence of this being possible and with the advent of felV vaccines his research stopped. Jean Mill took on the hybrids and became the founder of the beautiful cat we all know today as the Bengal Cat.

The Asian Leopard Cat (ALC) is a beautiful, shy, nocturnal cat, an ideal choice to put to a domestic cat in order to produce the outstanding bengal we know today. Because nature gave us the beauty and wild look, breeders have been able to concentrate on temperament, using only the sweetest natured cats in breeding programme's. We continue this on today, breeding first for temperament, then type to continue this great breed of cat we have been honored to adopt as our breed.

The Show Standards call for:

A large, sleek, very muscular body with it's hindquarters slightly higher than it's shoulders. The thick tail should be carried low in an adult, although, this is not usually the case in a kitten, which is acceptable. The Bengal Cat's head is rounded and slightly longer than wide. The nose should be broad, with light coloured, strong rounded chin and puffy full whisker pads created by the wide set canine teeth. The ears should be medium to small with rounded tips, pointing forward in profile. The eyes are round/slightly almond in shape, large but not bold, set in a slight slant to the base of the ear. Their coat should be silky and luxurious to the feel, a sprinkling of glitter is stunning although not necessary
